Why your role matters

The Head of Master Data Management will develop and implement a UNSW-wide MDM strategy aligned with business goals, starting with student data as the core domain. They will establish a data governance framework in collaboration with data producers and consumers to ensure data quality is fit for purpose. The role supports future MDM initiatives across other domains and requires strong technical, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills.

This role is part of the Enterprise Data Office, initially reporting to the Chief Data Officer. This role may be seconded to specific programs and has no direct reports

About the Role               

The successful applicant will be required to undertake and have experience in the following areas of expertise:

  • Define an organisation wide MDM strategy that aligns with University’s strategy and goals.
  • Play a key delivery role in scoping new projects and implementing MDM initiatives being the main lead for Data, ensuring services are delivered for the desired business objectives and outcomes.
  • Work in partnership with the data architecture team to ensure solutions are fit for business needs.
  • Work as a conduit between the technical and systems teams and senior stakeholders within the business to ensure alignment across all areas of the project.
  • Collaborate with data owners and consumers, and participate in appropriate forums to address and resolve issues related to MDM.
  • Act as the key liaison with the vendor for functional delivery and price negotiations for associated services and tools where needed.
  • Champion adoption of MDM usage across the organisation by sharing knowledge and promoting benefits.
  • Ensure there are appropriate data management practices implemented over MDM solutions with adequate oversight and reporting.
  • Responsible for working across the organisation for all MDM related matters to ensure timely resolution and escalation.

About You

  • Relevant tertiary qualification as well as significant professional experience in defining and implementing organisation wide MDM strategy. Hands on MDM implementation experience is a must for this role with past delivery experience in complex environment at a similar scale.
  • Solid understanding of MDM platforms (e.g., Informatica, Talend), architecture, data integration and tools.
  • Deep expertise in data architecture, data management including data governance and data quality management. Implementation experience is required.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve data issues that span multiple domains.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience with vendors management for functional delivery and financial negotiations.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
