Why this role matters:
UNSW Canberra is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join a high-performing, multidisciplinary research team working across artificial intelligence, ethics, computer vision, generative AI, simulations, and international humanitarian law. This role is part of a major research project developing autonomous testing systems to assess military systems in ethically complex scenarios.
You will play a key role in leading technical development, supporting digital infrastructure, and contributing to simulation environments and AI tools. This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic environment where bold ideas are encouraged and innovation is at the forefront.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide senior technical leadership and manage digital platforms supporting coding infrastructure and analysis tools
• Develop and test generative simulation and AI environments, including modelling and visualisation
• Offer DevOps guidance and manage coding support for project implementation
• Lead the preparation of research reports, software architecture documentation, and code documentation
• Ensure compliance with confidentiality, health and safety, and university policies
About You:
• A degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
• Strong DevOps and software development experience, including Unity and containerisation tools like Docker
• Experience deploying AI solutions on GPU machines or within Unity environments
• Familiarity with simulation engines (e.g. Gazebo), robotics operating systems, and generative AI
• Excellent teamwork, communication, and project tracking skills (e.g. Jira)
