The Chemical and Consulting Laboratory (CCL) is the commercial arm of the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) at UNSW Sydney. Working directly with industry to provide specialist technical services and advice to industry and other external clients, we offer state of the art analytical instrumentation, recognised expertise and practical experience to solve analytical problems.

You’ll be responsible for business development and facilitating access to analytical services across the centre, as well as overseeing the operations of the laboratory, including coordinating sample delivery and workflow of projects, and managing the scientific team. You’ll also provide professional and technical support to ensure efficient delivery of analytical services and reports on time and within budget.

The role reports to the Chief Operating Officer, MWAC and has up to two direct reports.

About the successful applicant:

You have a degree in Analytical Chemistry or Industrial Chemistry and or equivalent experience, as well as:

  • Significant experience in chemistry/chemical analysis including wet chemical techniques and instrumental analyses
  • Business development and client management
  • Ability to interpret infrared spectra and a good understanding of other commonly used laboratory instrumentation techniques, such as DSC, TGA, GLC, HPLC, NMR, ICP/OES, XRF and XRD.
  • Working with, training and supervising others within a research environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced. Proven ability to influence senior management and stakeholders as appropriate to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Sound influencing and consultation skills and proven ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
