Why your role matters

The Manager of Educational Data & Insights holds a pivotal position within the Educational Data & Insights team, part of the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic Quality portfolio. This role is instrumental in preparing and distributing student survey data, analytics and benchmarking, contributing to the development and implementation of Azure Databricks and other data and Power platform solutions. Key responsibilities include architecture design, ETL processes, multidimensional modelling and Datamart management.

The role involves close collaboration with the Director of Educational Data & Insights to deliver national and university student experience, performance and insights projects, implement system enhancements, and drive business process improvements. It also requires working alongside colleagues and stakeholders across UNSW to ensure the timely and high-quality delivery of services.

This position oversees one direct report, the Senior Data Analyst for Insights & Engagement.

Specific accountabilities for this role include:  

  • Manage the development and delivery of analytics, complex reporting and data modelling needs of the DVC Academic Quality portfolio.
  • Develop complex data analysis, methodologies, and predictive models for assessing student experience and education outcomes. 
  • Critically analyse complex information and draw insights and analytics from large amount of data, and support the Director in the development of executive reporting for the Senior Leadership team and various UNSW committees. 
  • Develop and maintain strong project management approaches to planning, prioritising requests and documenting technical processes.
  • Develop, foster and maintain excellent communication pathways and collaborative working relationships with UNSW stakeholders to identify and evaluate reporting requirements.

About You:                        
You will hold relevant tertiary qualifications in Data Analytics, Computer Science or Statistics, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and experience alongside: 

  • Proven technical expertise in the design and development of databases and data models, data mining and principles of building robust data pipelines. Experience with Azure, Databricks, Large Language Models solutions development and third-party API integrations is a strong advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience in migration, management and optimisation of cloud based ETL using Databricks.
  • Strong mathematical and statistical skills, high attention to detail and a drive to present data with a high degree of accuracy and completeness, along with proficiency in programming languages such as R and Python.
  • Experience in developing data visualisations and paginated reporting solutions within Power BI, DAX design and optimisation.
  • Advanced project management skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent complex reporting and analytics projects (end-to-end) and deadlines in a complex environment, ideally within higher education.
  • Proven experience in requirements gathering, documentation and preparing data governance artifacts alongside strong stakeholder engagement and leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to liaise effectively with all levels of staff and external stakeholders and to lead, mentor and develop a successful team.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills and the proven ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes.
