About the role

The Resident Mentor plays an important role within the Division of Education and Student Experience under the Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Success, by being a leading example to student residents, in their professional and personal lives, and by working closely with the Dean and Deputy Dean to facilitate the academic, social and cultural life of the College.

Resident Mentors (RMs) live with the students on their floors and provide daily academic and pastoral support. RMs aren’t teachers, but they’re a little like a supportive older sibling with experience to pass on and a willingness to help guide the residents.

Some of the duties involve: taking an active role in floor and College events, participating in meetings and training, assisting in the overnight/after hours on-call Duty Roster, mentoring students in meeting their academic requirements, as well as promoting respectful relationships between residents. You can view the full list of responsibilities in the job description (located at the bottom of the job ad on official UNSW Careers Page).

The successful person will be the first point of contact for all residents living on their floor in one of our colleges. This is what our colleges look like: https://www.unsw.edu.au/accommodation/colleges

Hours will vary from week to week depending on student needs – as well as what you have going on with your study or other professional commitments. We are currently recruiting across colleges and have several vacancies available; the successful candidates will be expected to start end of January, with contracts ending early December 2025.

About You:

You are a great communicator and will display sensitivity, confidentiality and responsiveness of the needs of resident students and staff. We are looking for someone who:

  • Is preferably engaged in study, academic employment and/or professional work associated with UNSW with a high level of academic achievement and/or demonstrated excellence in a professional field
  • Is living on site or willing to move into our college
  • Has demonstrated ability to contribute to the collegiate community life of a college or other establishment
  • Has experience in and/or a good understanding of the diverse needs and interests of students from a broad range of backgrounds and cultures, from within Australia and from overseas
  • Has an understanding of relevant equity and diversity policies, especially of harassment and discrimination policies, as they would relate to a college environment
  • Has a First Aid Certification or willing to undertake it before starting
  • Has a Working With Children Check and Police check (you will need to obtain those documents if successful)
  • Is willing to undertake Warden, Mental Health Awareness and other relevant UNSW training courses
  • Is committed to attending and maintaining Mental Health Awareness and other student support training

How to apply and recruitment process: Please submit your resume and a Cover Letter telling us why you are interested in the role and what you would bring.

There will be an application question asking what your availabilities are throughout the week.  Shortlisting will happen throughout the advertising process and interviews will start this side of the year until the 2nd and 3rd week of January 2025. Our teams will be away during the annual shutdown, from the 20th of December until the 6th of January.

Applications close:  5 January 11AM. We reserve the right to close the job ad earlier so apply now if you are interested.
