Would you like to assist with leading-edge research on the governance of activities in outer space? Your duties will be to facilitate and conduct research associated with various research projects, including the regulation of space activities in Australia and globally, the emergence of norms of behaviour about space activities, and military space activities generally.

Why your role matters:

In a burgeoning domain that already facilitates much of the conveniences of modern life, but which is increasingly beset by congestion, competition and conflict, your support of, and contribution to, this research will help ensure that we can all derive great present, future and enduring benefits, not just for those alive today, but also for all future generations. You will do so in the context of pragmatic acceptance of the reality of human conflict, while supporting the extension of the rules-based order to the space domain. You will help Australia to continue and extend its role as a global exemplar in space governance, while promoting the commercial and public benefits of the domain.

Who you are:

  • A university graduate in the humanities, with a focus on space activities, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training or experience.
  • Knowledge of research protocols, design and planning as involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, to respectful relationships within and outside a team, and to the health and safety of all those with whom you work.

Location is flexible and can be partially in Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy campus and partially from home. The role will involve surges for in-person support to multiple workshops, which are likely to be conducted in Canberra. The project budgets do not include any travel costs for a Casual Research Officer. It is possible, but unlikely, that travel costs for in-person attendance could be funded.

The role will involve at least 250 hours spread unevenly across approximately 18 months. In addition to workshops themselves, it will also involve surges for intensive periods of preparation for workshops, and initial preparation of project deliverables.

UNSW is committed to evolving a culture that embraces equity and supports a diverse and inclusive community where everyone can participate fairly, in a safe and respectful environment. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and encourage applications from people of diverse gender, sexual orientation, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background, people with disability and those with caring and family responsibilities. UNSW provides workplace adjustments for people with disability, and access to flexible work options for eligible staff.

The University reserves the right not to proceed with any appointment.
