The School of Physics is one of the leading Physics schools in Australia. It offers a world class undergraduate physics degree, as well as a postgraduate PhD research program for over 50 students. 33 academic staff conduct theoretical and experimental research in quantum physics, astrophysics, fundamental physics; and condensed matter physics.
The Project Engineer, Quantum Sensing plays a key role within the Faculty of Science/School of Physics in delivering a prototype quantum sensing device.
The role entails development of a prototype electronic device, providing project coordination and support, reporting and analytical support, developing communications, building key internal and external relationships, and providing administrative support for key programs and projects related to the device development.
About the role
• Level 6 – ($100k – $107k) - plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed Term – 12 months
• Full-time (35 hours per week)
The role reports to the Production Manager, Quantum Sensing, and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Contribute to the design, manufacture and delivery of a prototype field-deployable quantum sensing device.
- Support the development of project plans and schedules and participate in planning processes as required.
- Monitor, track and report on the status of project deliverables to ensure time, cost and quality metrics are in line with approved project plans for assigned projects.
- Provide practical and proactive project support and administrative services to project team and stakeholders.
- Assess and monitor project risks and issues and provide solutions where applicable.
- Coordinate project administration including coordination of workshops and meetings, minute taking, manage assigned actions and follow-ups and project status reporting.
- Develop and manage effective communications with key stakeholders, both internal and external to the project.
- Support adherence to UNSW governance pathways to ensure projects are managed within a defined, consistent and proven set of rules for project development.
- In collaboration with the Production Manager, develop key specifications for the successful implementation of an out-of-lab quantum magnetometer based on an organic light-emitting diode (OLED).
- Undertake and contribute to the design and implementation of an out-of-lab quantum, magnetometer based on OLEDs.
- Field test and benchmark a prototype OLED quantum magnetometer.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
- Cooperate with all health & safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.
About the successful applicant:
(Selection Criteria)
- Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience particularly in the areas of electronic or quantum engineering or technical product development.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
- Sound stakeholder management skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
- Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including microwave/microelectronics and low-level software languages such as C/C++ and/or FPGA hardware design languages.
- Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
- Project experience, with an understanding of the project life cycle and development of project plans, objectives and documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
