The Faculty of Science teaches approximately 7000 full-time student equivalents, with an academic staff of approximately 500 and general staff of 300. The Faculty is one of the largest and most complex faculties of UNSW Sydney. It comprises the School of Aviation, Biological Earth and Environmental Science (BEES), Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS), Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Mathematics and Statistics, Psychology, and Physics. It also includes several major Research Centres and field stations.
The Head, Science Education will play a key role within the Science Education Team in providing strategic and operational leadership for the Science Education Team. This a collaborative role which will work closely with the academic leadership team in particular the Dean, Deputy Dean Education and Associate Deans.
About the role
• LEVEL 9 - $155k - $164k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Continuing
• Full-time (35 hours per week)
The role reports to the Deputy Dean Education and has three reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Work collaboratively with the academic executive to provide strategic leadership across the Education portfolio in Science including program offerings, education innovation and partnerships.
- Lead a thriving, effective and high performing team - including developing, managing and engaging team members and driving a strong culture.
- Mentor and develop the Science Education team through clear objectives and excellent feedback, with a focus on high performance, continuous improvement and workforce management
- Implement and drive data driven approaches across the Faculty, leading the provision of education related reporting to the Schools and Faculty Executive.
- Contribute to the implementation of the Faculty’s strategic plan by providing strategic advice on educational priorities and aligning initiatives with long term goals.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Science Education Team including high level resource and financial management, legal and governance matters, procurement, risk management, project management and performance monitoring and reporting.
- Provide high level governance oversight to the Education portfolio, ensuring compliance and strategic alignment.
- Build and maintain strong relationships and working partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with Faculty and UNSW strategic objectives and identify opportunities for collaboration and efficiencies in service delivery.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values
- Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Relevant tertiary qualification with extensive management expertise, program management experience or postgraduate qualifications with extensive relevant experience, or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
- Extensive experience in successfully leading and managing a team with proven significant ability to motivate and create a positive workplace culture in order to achieve quality outcomes.
- Undertake high level strategic analysis, report writing, development of proposals for consideration by the Deputy Dean Education and other Facutly leaders.
- Strategic leadership experience in higher education, with a focus on program portfolio renewal, governance and quality assurance matters, and student load planning processes.
- Extensive operational management skills including planning, priority setting, with a proven ability to deal with multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Proven skills and experience in strategic and resource planning within the higher education, goal setting and project management, using a data driven approach.
- Excellent consultation, influencing and negotiation skills and proven ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders including those internal and external to the Faculty.
- Outstanding interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail.
- Advanced level of computer literacy, working with a range of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Office 365 suite including Teams, One Drive, Power BI, Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Outlook and with using UNSW’s enterprise systems.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
