The Opportunity

The School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is seeking a Research Associate. In this role you will be conducting research both independently and as part of a team on a project titled “Condition Monitoring of Aircraft Propulsion for Automated Diagnostics”. Your research will focus on the project’s goals to discover and develop new techniques to detect and diagnose anomalies in aeroengine bearings and gears, developing advanced signal processing techniques and models of aircraft engine components. 

This position will give you the opportunity to develop your industry research and professional activities. You will also have the opportunity to participate in conferences and workshops, assist with the supervision of students, collaborate with industry partners, and have active engagement with fellow researchers both at UNSW and other institutions.

This role reports to A/Prof Pietro Borghesani and has no direct reports.

  • Salary, Level A – AUD $110,059 to $117,718 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time
  • Fixed-term contract – 24 months

Skills and Experience

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in one or more of the following areas:
    • condition monitoring
    • signal processing, especially if related to vibration signals in mechanical systems
    • machine dynamics and modelling, especially if related to aero-engines, gears, bearings and/or rotating machines
    • statistics, especially if related to the modelling of stochastic processes and time-series
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
