Why your role matters
The Associate Course Coordinator (ACC) in the IFY is a Level A, Education-Focussed role expected to make outstanding contributions to innovative and integrative teaching practice in the Business School’s Integrated First Year and beyond. Primarily responsible for one of the 8 large IFY courses year-round, the ACC is instrumental in assuring stability and advancing improvements in content delivery and student experience in their course and across the IFY, assisting rotating Course Coordinators (CC) and discipline lecturers in their work, and liaising with school teams, educational designers (EDD), support (EDS) and the IFY leadership team. Furthermore, the ACC is the primary point of contact and mentor for a large team of tutors, and responsible for managing them and ensuring the quality of teaching and a positive student experience in the tutorials.
As a group, the ACCs work closely with the Academic Lead of the IFY (ALIFY) on improving processes and delivery across the IFY and liaise with the Development Lead of the IFY (DLIFY) on course renovations as well as integration across IFY courses. ACCs are expected to take an active role in the ideation, design, and implementation of course improvements, typically in cooperation with education designers and other members of the teaching team.
The role of the ACC reports to the ALIFY with a dotted line to the relevant CC and has no direct reports.
Other key responsibilities include:
- Partner with IFY Lead and CC to create a development plan for tutors and authentically demonstrate commitment to professional development.
- Ensure thorough onboarding and preparation of tutors to deliver a quality education experience; establish a “buddy system” and a thriving Community of Practice of Head Tutors across all IFY courses.
- Actively coordinate course meetings when required with the CC and all tutors.
- Participate in the recruitment, selection of tutors/ sessional staff together with the wider operational support such as SAST and HR.
- Act as the channel for communication between CC and tutors ensuring consistency of material delivery and between tutorials by reviewing the tutorial handouts/guides.
- Teach 1-2 tutorial streams per term (ideally at least 2 terms per year) and be across all lecture content, including rubric design and an amount of marking / grade moderation.
Who you are
Skills and experience:
- An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a related discipline with professional experience or further study
- Previous experience as a head tutor and/or facilitator of large undergraduate courses
- Passionate about improving the effectiveness, quality and relevance of the student learning experience, and about pedagogically-driven use of technology to innovate learning and teaching practices
- Motivated to work collaboratively with a large group of staff and disparate perspectives across disciplines
- An ability to integrate curricular and co-curricular components of the IFY
- Display proactivity, conscientiousness, collaboration, ability to work as a team, and be accountable
