About this role and why it matters

The Senior Policy Officer will manage a policy transformation project within the Division of Education and Student Experience (DESE) to create a new policy by streamlining and consolidating existing policies and procedures.

The Senior Policy Officer plays a key role in managing the policy transformation end to end, leading workshops, drafting the policy for consultation, reviewing the University feedback and making final recommendations to the Policy Leads and Responsible Officer (Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education and Student Experience). The role will provide expert advice and help to UNSW staff during policy development and implementation.

The role will have significant working relationships with team members in DESE, Governance, senior UNSW staff and the wider University community. The Senior Policy Officer reports to the existing Senior Policy Officer in DESE and has no direct reports.

Main overall responsibilities Summary

  • Manage a policy transformation project from end to end, providing expert advice to inform and influence the development of the new policy
  • Apply the UNSW Policy Framework in developing the new policy
  • Engage and facilitate consultation workshops with key stakeholders and subject matter experts to identify synergies within current policies and develop evidence-based policy solutions that are able to be implemented University-wide
  • Undertake benchmarking and analysis to improve the new policy and the underlying processes
  • Manage the consultation process for the new policy, reviewing all feedback received across the University and make final recommendations to the Policy Leads and Responsible Officer
  • Apply excellent writing skills to produce an easy-to-read policy and other documents in plain language
  • Ensure authority that is expressed in the new policy is consistent with the Delegations Policy and schedules
  • Develop and provide reports to the Policy Transformation Project Steering Committee, University Leadership Team and Academic Board for the purpose of tracking policy reviews

Who You Are

We are looking for someone who is aligned with UNSW’s vision and values, who is highly organised and who comes equipped with:

  • Previous experience with the policy development lifecycle including reviewing, drafting and implementing policies – it would be ideal if you have done policy consolidation projects
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills, including benchmarking and interpreting legislation, policies and procedures
  • Great project management skills and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience in successful project and resources management and the development and communication of policies, practices and strategies, particularly in the context of change
  • Higher Education background is highly regarded and would be advantageous given the nature of the work
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to write for a variety of audiences and to produce easy-to-read policies and documents in plain language

The role is hybrid, Monday to Friday. The role is funded until February 2027 (with no possibility of extension at this stage).
