Position Summary:

The Research Development Manager is essential in guiding and supporting the development and delivery of bids for major research initiatives, funding opportunities and prestigious grant schemes aligned with the Business School’s research strategy.

The role entails the provision of strategic advice and assistance in the development of high quality, competitive research grant applications and major research opportunities for UNSW Business School researchers across all types of national research activities and funding. The role reports to the Manager, Strategic Research Development, within the Research and Enterprise Team and has no direct reports.


Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement guidelines, processes and procedures that align and support the research activities of the UNSW Business School and assist applicants in formulating highly competitive research funding proposals.
  • Under the guidance of the Manager, Strategic Research Development, develop and manage the requests for faculty contributions to grant application budgets, providing accurate financial information and ensuring a consistent approach across all schemes.
  • Work with the Manager (Strategic Research Development) to identify and develop strategies to target major funding opportunities across all research areas, actively fostering and enhancing the research profile of the School and increasing the level, quality and diversity of research funding.
  • Proactively monitor and assist UNSW Business School researchers, facilitating their engagement with other UNSW researchers and external organisations. This will also involve the provision of support to ensure submission of high quality, competitive research funding proposals.
  • Coordinate major research funding proposals and grant applications that require a cross- discipline approach and involve multiple faculties and teams of researchers.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with relevant internal stakeholders, including a range of UNSW teams.
  • Maintain knowledge on current funding guidelines and relevant legislative, political, economic, academic and industry policy matters. This knowledge will support the development of budget simulations for grant proposals in line with financial guidelines.
  • Provide advice to the Manager (Strategic Research Development) on potential risks in research applications and develop ways of negating or minimising these through the provision of advice on research grants and research strategy and ways to develop and enhance research funding proposals.

Skills and Experience:

To be considered you will hold Australian Working Rights or Australian Citizenship. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.

  • A relevant postgraduate degree in a business-related discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and or experience.
  • Experience in an academic research unit, including proven achievements in providing support and feedback to applicants throughout the development and success of research funding proposals.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Australian Higher Education Sector and knowledge of the research environment and funding schemes.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing projects, with strong organisational skills to effectively manage priorities and time.
  • Sound influencing and consultation skills, including an ability to exercise initiative and discretion in dealing with sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
