Why Your Role Matters:

The Software Engineering Team Leader in the Biosecurity Program at the Kirby Institute will lead a team of engineers in developing and maintaining the EPIWATCH® system. This role involves managing agile development cycles, overseeing system functionality and architecture, and collaborating closely with the Epidemiology Team Lead to prioritise workflows and meet project deadlines while aligning with stakeholder requirements.

The role of Software Engineering Team Leader reports to Professor and Program Head, the Kirby Institute and has up to four direct reports.

Skills and Experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in software engineering with at least 3 years of relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Experience with the EPIWATCH® system or developing and managing a similar platform related to epidemiology, and a sound understanding of the architecture and functions of such a system on web and mobile app interfaces.
  • At least 3 years demonstrated experience in full stack development.
  • Experience in Microsoft Azure cloud computing, Large Language Models, machine learning and natural language processing.
  • Leadership and management experience in a software development setting, including leading daily sprints in an agile development cycle.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a range of systems, languages and applications, including Linux, Git, SendGrid, docker, PostgreSQL, Bing News API, Vue, Java, JavaScript, and Python.
  • Demonstrated innovation and creativity in addressing complex software engineering problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and a proven ability to manage a team, work well both independently and with others.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to write reports
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
