The School of Optometry and Vision Science

The School of Optometry and Vision Science is one of the largest and most prestigious optometry and vision science schools in Australasia and was ranked #2 institution globally for research output in optometry in 2021.  It offers a three-year Bachelor of Vision Science undergraduate program, which can be taken as a standalone degree with the option of an honours year or lead to a two-year Master of Clinical Optometry at the postgraduate level.  The Master of Clinical Optometry qualifies graduates to practice as an Optometrist in Australia, New Zealand and many Asian countries.

Those who are appointed to this prestigious stream will be expected to successfully drive educational excellence within the university’s teaching and learning communities. The role of Lecturer – Education Focussed reports to the Director of Teaching or designate and has no direct reports.

As a Lecturer - Education Focused, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of optometrists by bringing your expertise in ocular diseases and therapeutics to life. You’ll craft and deliver engaging lectures and tutorials across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, guided by a clear teaching philosophy that inspires curiosity and deep learning. Beyond the classroom, you’ll lead the way in developing innovative teaching strategies—whether through blended learning, online platforms, or cutting-edge curriculum design—supported by a collaborative academic team. Your responsibilities will also include managing course administration, coordinating subjects, advising students, and ensuring rigorous assessment standards. This is your opportunity to combine academic leadership with creativity, making a lasting impact on both education and the profession.

Skills & Experience

  • Registered as Optometrist in Australia with ocular therapeutics and demonstrated expertise in clinical optometry; actively stays up to date with discipline knowledge and development.
  • Demonstrated ability for teaching and curriculum development at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Experience using blended/online teaching and learning pedagogies and implementing educational technologies and innovations.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence (e.g. relevant leading-edge discipline-based curriculum design and development at a variety of levels and scales).
  • Demonstrated capability to enhance student learning and career-focused education (e.g. better ways of assessing students, practicums, work integrated learning and contributing to bringing out the best in students, student feedback and students as partners).
  • Evidence of professional development of teaching practice in self and others (e.g. mentoring, tutor development and peer support of colleagues).
  • Demonstrated excellence in educational quality (e.g. Assurance of Learning themes, professional and accreditation).
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to support and inspire with staff and students from diverse backgrounds and support Student Equity Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.
