The School of Mathematics and Statistics currently has more than sixty continuing academic staff and more than thirty research staff as well as visiting academics. UNSW is the top university in Australia for mathematics across the CWTS Leiden, ARWU, USNews, and QS rankings. In Statistics, the School has research strengths in Bayesian and Monte Carlo Methods, Biostatistics and Ecology, Combinatorics, Data Science, Finance and Risk Analysis, Nonparametric Statistics, Optimisation, Stochastic Analysis, and Stochastic Modelling. The School’s research groups are interconnected, with frequent interactions between groups and with other schools and faculties both within and outside UNSW. The School also hosts the newly established UNSW Data Science Hub which is a major strategic initiative of the Faculty of Science to cultivate and promote foundational and applied research in Data Science. 
 
The Research Associate position will undertake research on a Discovery Project funded by the Australian Research council. The project seeks to advance our understanding of families of algebraic varieties through derived categorical and Hodge theoretic methods. The project’s investigators are Sándor Kovács at University of Washington and Behrouz Taji at UNSW.
 
About the role
 
• Level A - $110K - $117K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed Term – 18 months – with possibility of 6 months extension (based on perfomance and or funding)
• Full-time (35 hours per week)
 
The Research Associate reports to Behrouz Taji and has no direct reports.
 
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
 
• Contribute independently or as a team member in collaborative research with a focus to enhance the quality of research outcomes in the Algebra and Geometry groups at UNSW Sydney 
• Collaborative or independent publications in leading international mathematical journals 
• Undertake specific research projects under the guidance of a research leader and contribute to development of research activities 
• Participate in and present their work at domestic and international conferences and seminars 
• Assist with the supervision and mentoring of PhD students in the Algebra and Geometry groups at UNSW Sydney 
• Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct 
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others 
 
About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)
 
To be successful in this role you will have:
 
• A PhD degree in Pure Mathematics in a related subject
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• An outstanding track record of research publications
• Demonstrated high-level analytical and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships
• Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
