Why your role matters

The Manager, Academic Development is responsible for overseeing professional development programs, activities, and initiatives within Academic Development at UNSW. This role involves designing, managing, delivering, evaluating, and continually improving both existing and new academic development programs and resources. The Manager will play a key role in creating new programs and initiatives that support all UNSW academics, aligning with the university’s strategy of providing accessible education that empowers both current and future generations.

The position reports to the Team Lead, Academic Development and Career Advancement, and supervises two direct reports. In this role, the Manager will work closely with both the Team Lead and the Director, Educational Excellence, to ensure the success of academic development initiatives.

Specific accountabilities for this role include:  

  • Oversee the coordination and implementation of existing academic development programs and initiatives including; Beginning to Teach (BTT), The Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT) the Teaching Accelerator program (TAP), the Course Design Institute (CDI) and others as developed.
  • Actively contribute to the development, evolution and implementation of new academic development programs and initiatives to ensure academic development continues to remain aligned with UNSW and the PVCE’s strategic goals and objectives and continues to be current, relevant, available and accessible to all UNSW academics.

About You:  

  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent experience in a relevant field or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to educational programs and initiatives. AdvanceHE Fellowship (Fellow or Senior Fellow) highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, developing, facilitating and evaluating face-to-face, hybrid and online professional development programs on the Kensington campus; development of   resources, services and initiatives to build capability in learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrated experience in building relationships across faculties and providing opportunities for academic staff to contribute their expertise to teaching development programs, workshops and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success and experience managing staff to develop and foster teamwork, ensuring a client-focused approach and achievement of shared goals, ability to motivate and inspire staff to ensure commitment and engagement, experience in supporting team members to develop their professional capabilities including identifying and supporting opportunities for professional development. 
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborating across a range of teams to support and contribute to commons goals and strategic priorities.
  • High-level interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills with the ability to build and maintain effective collaborative professional relationships with staff at all levels, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Outstanding organisational skills including the ability to deliver across multiple projects/ initiatives simultaneously and provide leadership in a complex and high-volume work environment.
  • Demonstrated high-level written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced level of computer literacy with excellent skills in Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn and utilise new technologies and platforms to enhance delivery and accessibility of programs and initiatives. Familiarity with Moodle is desirable.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
