The School of Psychology at UNSW is the leading Psychology school in Australia. It is located in the Faculty of Science and is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching. It offers world class undergraduate psychology degrees, as well as postgraduate professional Masters training in Clinical and Forensic Psychology, an online Graduate Diploma program, and a PhD research program with over 120 students. 40 academic staff conduct experimental research in many areas of Psychology, including behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, perception, learning, memory and cognition, as well as health, social, developmental, clinical and forensic psychology. UNSW Psychology is the only School in the southern hemisphere ranked in the top 30 by discipline in the THES, QS and ARWU rankings. The School has well equipped research and teaching facilities and attracts outstanding staff and students from Australia and overseas. UNSW is located 5 km from the centre of Sydney and is close to other research centres, teaching hospitals, transport, shopping, and beaches.
The Research Assistant provides technical and research assistance to the research team working on a LEAD project and is responsible for organising focus groups including participant recruitment, data collection, surveys and lab-based assessments as well as carrying out systematic reviews.
About the role
• $85k - $96k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed Term – 6.5 months (or to September 30th, 2025)
• Part time (28 hours)
The role reports to Professor Kaarin Anstey and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Respond to routine enquiries relating to research.
- Assist with preparing ethics applications.
- Recruit study participants for focus groups.
- Maintain research databases, records and publications registers.
- Conduct literature reviews and support data synthesis relating to Cognitive decline and dementia risk.
- Conduct statistical data reporting.
- Assist with data collection for focus groups with consumers, surveys and lab-based assessments.
- Coordinate activities with research teams, assist with project reporting, managing assigned actions and follow-ups.
- Adhere to take part in relevant training on NHMRC research ethics guidelines, National Privacy Principles, and Responsible research conduct including data handling.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.
About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Honours degree in Psychology or equivalent 4 years training in psychology.
- Demonstrated experience with preparation of applications for institutional approvals for ethics, risk assessments, research proposals or data sharing.
- Demonstrated experience in data analysis, literature reviews, and research projects.
- Demonstrated interest in ageing and/or dementia risk reduction.
- Excellent time management and organisational skills, and the ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
- Highly advanced interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience providing effective customer service and support to clients at all levels.
- Highly proficient computer literacy with excellent skills in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to plan, organise and co-ordinate focus groups.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
