Why your Role Matters
This pivotal role oversees the strategic direction of the professional growth and capability development of our academic and professional staff. Appreciating the diversity of the workforce, you will utilise local expertise to oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative learning frameworks and programs. Collaborate with senior stakeholders to assess learning and development needs and identify growth opportunities that create a sustainable, high-impact learning strategy aligned with UNSW’s mission and values.
Reporting to the Director of Culture & Capability, you will shape and refine approaches to upskilling our workforce, pitching innovative learning strategies to create forward-thinking training initiatives that cater to the varied needs of our workforce and stay ahead of workforce learning needs.
This role manages the Learning and Development team with one direct report and 3 indirect.
Key focuses of the role include:
- Building on UNSW’s Learning and Development plan, collaborating with localised stakeholder groups to identify long-term development goals and promote continuous learning.
- Leading the design, delivery, and evaluation of training programs, both in-person and digital, ensuring they meet diverse faculty and staff needs.
- Collaborating with senior leaders and stakeholders to assess learning needs, ensuring data-driven and relevant training initiatives.
- Promoting cross-functional collaboration, utilising technology, and innovative learning tools, while providing coaching and mentoring to foster a high-performing team environment.
Skills & Experience Summary: We’re looking for a Learning and Development leader with extensive experience in overseeing the design, implementation, and evaluation of innovative programs within large and diverse organisations to drive continuous improvement in staff training initiatives.
You’ll hold the following skills and experience:
- Tertiary qualifications or relevant experience and/or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education or training.
- Proven track record in designing, developing and evaluating effective learning and development programs that drive measurable outcomes across diverse employee groups, particularly in higher education or large, complex organisations.
- A strong understanding of legal and regulatory requirements related to staff training, including mandatory training compliance.
- Extensive experience leading and managing L&D teams, including the ability to inspire, develop and guide a high-performing team. Strong skills in coaching, mentoring and facilitation.
- Previous experience collaborating with colleagues and project teams to design, implement and refine a Learning & Development module as part of a larger IT system transformation and implementation.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication and presentation skills with a proven ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including senior leadership, academic and professional staff and external partners.
- Ability to use data and analytics to track the effectiveness of training programs, ensure compliance and inform the design and continuous improvement of learning initiatives.
