Why The Role Matters:
The Centre for Sustainable Development Reform (CSDR) established by the UNSW Faculty of Law and Justice in 2022, aims to connect knowledge and people to make small steps towards big changes. It creates safe spaces for changemakers—from government, business, and wider society—to plan pragmatic action for a sustainable low-carbon future informed by knowledge and insights from across the world. The CSDR builds on diverse research, education, and knowledge exchange partnerships aligned with global sustainable development commitments to drive forward the implementation of innovative and transformative workstreams. Currently active in over 20 countries, the CSDR works closely with decision-makers across government, international institutions, local communities, and the private and non-private sectors to create new approaches to decision making as well as bold and intelligent reforms.
Our team is made up of multi-disciplinary focussed researchers who are working on topics at the intersections of economics, politics, law, environmental management, data science and development. The CSDR Research Officer will contribute proactively on existing projects while also offering key project management and network capacity development for the CSDR. The Research Officer will work across projects which contribute to the application of knowledge in the field of climate law, energy law and natural law. The CSDR Hub Research Officer works closely with the CSDR project teams under the guidance of the CSDR Directors.
Skills and Experience:

- A university degree in a relevant discipline along with experience working in a similar discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training or experience.
- Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
- Demonstrated ability to support high quality academic research and conduct independent research with support for identifying objectives.
- Knowledge of and experience working within research protocols and an ability to report against research and project milestones.
- Demonstrated experience in environmental and ocean accounting and the relationship to policy reform.
- Evidence of an ability to translate research into high quality knowledge products for end users or decision-makers.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build productive relationships.
- Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills with an ability to accept guidance and offer expertise where appropriate.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
Accountabilities:

- Contribute to reports, publications and presentations that enhance the scholarly output of the research area. Draft opinion pieces, expert insights, briefings and blogs to broaden the impact of and communicate the research they are involved in.
- Apply substantial technical knowledge to a range of non-standard or complex enquiries related to the research area and support the broader CSDR team by sharing advice and expertise for related activities.
- Coordinate, plan and support the organisation of events with external partners, including workshops, webinars and dialogues.
- Contribute independent expertise and analysis to research and policy paper production in collaboration with colleagues from outside UNSW via CSDR partnerships.
- Lead on the preparation of high-quality responses to consultation drafts of policies and papers in collaboration with CSDR team
- Identify and, with CSDR Directors, develop bids for funding and work that area aligned with CSDR objectives.
- Work in project teams to deliver on joint outputs and, where necessary, supervise Research Assistants to develop quality products showcasing independent analysis and critical interpretation
- Build own internal and external network to enhance impact and awareness of the wider research and policy landscape relevant to area of study.
