The Project Officer plays a key role within the Centre for Ecosystem Science, School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences in Science Faculty in providing high level practical and efficient project support to an ARC Laureate, the project team and key partners and stakeholders.
We aim to deliver state-of the-art ecosystem data streams, advanced skills capacity and ground-breaking thematic risk assessments. These Australian innovations for ecosystem conservation will influence nature-positive agendas worldwide.
The role is expected to provide project coordination, research assistance, reporting and analytical support, developing communications, building key internal and external relationships, and co-ordinating key programs and projects.
About the role
• Level 6 - $100k - $107k - plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed Term – 5 years
• Part-time (21 hours per week)
The role reports to Professor David Keith and has no direct reports.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
- Lead and manage partner co-ordination, communication, engagement and knowledge exchange for ‘Foundations for leading nature positive ecosystem conservation agenda’ ARC Industry Laureate project.
- Monitor, track and report on the status of project deliverables to ensure time, cost and quality metrics are in line with approved project plans, liaising with finance managers when required.
- Coordinate project administration including coordination of workshops, meetings, , minute taking of industry partners and the project committee. Maintain strong and effective stakeholder relationships throughout the Laureate team.
- Co-ordinate activities and interactions between partners, collaborators and the project team, including regular project updates to partners, workshops, partner visits, symposia, field inspections and publications.
- Provide research support to the Laureate team through collaborations and contributions to research and data management activities, including the maintenance of an ecosystem image library and collaboration on research publications.
- Co-ordinate structured expert elicitation to support research activities, engaging ecosystem specialists.
- Support research fieldwork to measure vegetation and animal habitat variables and collect georeferenced training and validation data for ecosystem mapping.
- Act as the key liaison point and content developer for media activity (including website, social media, EDMs, newsletters, video production and SharePoint) taking direction from project lead and escalating where necessary.

- Cooperate with all health & safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.
About the successful applicant:
(Selection Criteria)
- Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
- Sound stakeholder management skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
- Project experience, with an understanding of the project life cycle and development of project plans, objectives and documentation.
- Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including spreadsheets, text editors and publication software and basic familiarity with statistical or mapping software.
- Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
- General understanding of Australian ecosystem ecology.
- Basic skills in field ecology and management of ecological data.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
