Why your role matters

The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility is a central research and research support unit within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) at UNSW Sydney. The resources of the NMR facility are available to the entire UNSW Sydney community as well as industry and other external clients. The Technical Officer role will primarily be responsible assisting in the running of the EPR systems in the lab including training and maintenance of the EPR instrument. The role of the Technical Officer reports to the Head of the NMR Facility and has no direct reports.

The Organisation

The Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) is part of the Division of Research.  We manage major instrumentation used by researchers for the study of the structure and composition of biological, chemical and physical materials.  Our facilities are housed in custom-built laboratories, mainly in the Lowy, Wallace Wurth and Chemical Sciences buildings.

The Centre's major Research Facilities are accessible to all staff and students of UNSW, as well as to external researchers. Government and industry users are also welcome. Staff of the Centre provide research collaboration, technical support, education and training to researchers accessing the facilities. 

Who you are

You have a tertiary qualification in chemistry or related laboratory discipline with subsequent technical experience in a laboratory environment or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training, and experience, and can demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • NMR Spectroscopy and in providing user training
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal), including ability to liaise with a diverse group of people from varying backgrounds, interpretation, and presentation of analytical results.
  • Advanced level of computer literacy, working with a range of computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Office 365 suite including Teams, One Drive, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook and with using UNSW's enterprise systems.
  • Outstanding organisational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to deal with multiple tasks and projects, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, scientific instrumentation, and experience with IT based laboratory management systems is highly desirable.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
