About this opportunity:
The University of New South Wales (UNSW) seeks a visionary and strategic Chief Data Officer (CDO) to lead our Enterprise Data function and drive the development and implementation of a comprehensive data management and analytics strategy. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of data across the University, enhancing decision-making, improving operational efficiency, and fostering data- driven innovations.
The CDO will be responsible for driving the effective and efficient utilisation of data, ensuring robust data policy, data risk management and adherence to legislation. Furthermore, they will work closely with key stakeholders to identify and prioritise critical data projects including student data management, alumni data, Master Data Management solutions, data models, data retention and privacy compliance.
The CDO will build and lead a small high performing team, as well as indirectly engage other specialists from across the University to deliver solutions ensuring data initiatives align and support the University’s goals and objectives.
The role reports to the Vice-President, Operations. In addition, the CDO will work closely with the Chief Information Officer on Automation, Integration and Identity and Access Management services.
Key areas of responsibility:
Data Strategy and Governance:
- Develop and implement a data strategy aligned with the University’s goals.
- Lead a process to define the future operating model for data and establish governance frameworks to ensure data integrity and compliance.
Data Management and Architecture:
- Oversee the design and implementation of data infrastructure and systems.
- Ensure data quality and interoperability across platforms, managing the data lifecycle effectively.
Data Analytics and Insights:
- Identify and leverage data analytics and predictive modelling to drive insights and inform decision-making.
- Collaborate with academic and professional departments to develop analytical tools, models, and performance measurements.
Data Culture and Training:
- Promote a data-driven culture and enhance data literacy through training programs.
- Support locally embedded data and analytics specialists and teams where appropriate.
Data Privacy and Security:
- Ensure compliance with privacy laws and regulations and implement data security measures.
- Mitigate risks through controls and monitoring.
Who we are ideally looking for:
The Chief Data Officer will be a highly experienced data and analytics expert with a track record in developing a data and analytics strategy across a complex organisation, driving outcomes to uplift capability. They will have a strategic and results focused orientation combined with a deep understanding of data governance and regulatory requirements. An inspirational leader and relationship builder, the successful candidate will be someone who is willing to "roll up their sleeves", as well as having the gravitas and confidence to quickly build credibility across a diverse stakeholder base. They will be a proven team leader with a track record in building and developing high performing talent.
Ideal Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in significant data leadership roles across data management, analytics and/or information technology in a complex organisational structure.
- Demonstrated understanding of Australian data regulatory and security requirements and experience implementing data security measures.
- Track record across data analysis, statistical modelling and data visualisation tools and techniques.
- Enterprise level transformation experience.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications.
