The Opportunity

Sunswift Racing within the Faculty of Engineering, UNSW, is seeking a Commercialisation Lead to continue the faculties long history of developing and bringing to market many important new technologies that have brought significant positive impact for society.

Sunswift Racing, based at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, is a leading solar-electric vehicle development team. Our team was founded back in 1996 by a small group of electrical academics and PhD’s who had the idea to build a car to compete in the famous World Solar Challenge. Sunswift has built several solar vehicles, with the eighth currently in production. Notably, our latest car, Sunswift 7, holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s fastest EV over 1000km on a single battery charge, garnering significant global media attention. As the Sunswift Racing Commercialisation Lead, you will elevate our success by establishing a commercialisation team to audit and manage Sunswift Racing’s innovations and IP. You will develop and implement a Technology Strategy to bring low-carbon solutions to market, oversee the commercialisation process, manage business cases, and form industry partnerships. Your role will also involve positioning Sunswift Racing as a leading R&D facility, with focus areas including transport-specific photovoltaics, battery storage, hydrogen fuel cells, energy management, automation, V2X technology, sustainable materials, and infrastructure.

Skills & Experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent industry experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Experience in product development and bringing a deep tech product from lab to market.
  • Proven experience in business strategy development, commercialisation and IP management.
  • Highly developed networking, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to manage projects involving diverse interest groups/stakeholders. 
  • Excellent leadership and extensive experience in managing and motivating a team, with an ability to work collaboratively to quickly establish and maintain a high level of personal and professional credibility with the wider team and stakeholders.
  • Established networks and ability to engage with industry partners and investors.
  • Knowledge of the transport and mobility sector and the role of renewable technologies is highly desirable.
  • Experience in an academic or research environment is a plus.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
