The Radiocarbon Technical Officer is an instrument scientist role working with the CHRONOS team to support researchers by maintaining, operating, and training on the facility instrumentation, including the MICADAS, IRMS and AGE3 graphitisation unit. This role reports to the CHRONOS Facility Operations Director with a dotted reporting line to the Scientific Director of the Facility.

The Organisation

The CHRONOS 14Carbon Cycling Facility is a radiocarbon dating facility based around an Ionplus MICADAS (Mini Carbon Dating System) accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS). The facility was developed in collaboration with researchers at ANSTO and is located in a state-of-the-art purpose-built laboratory at the Kensington Campus of UNSW, part of the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre. The facility also includes equipment for chemical sample preparation, graphitisation for AMS dating, and stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS).

Skills and Experience

You have a Postgraduate degree or an undergraduate degree with equivalent experience, in a discipline involving extensive use of inorganic or isotope mass spectrometry and its research applications in the earth sciences, as well as:

• Extensive knowledge of the operation and maintenance of inorganic/isotopic mass spectrometers.  Demonstrated experience training others in techniques related to inorganic/isotopic mass spectrometry.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), including the ability to liaise with a diverse group of individuals, interpret and present analytical results, and write scientific reports.
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and flexibly within a team environment.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
