A position has become available for a mechanical technician to join a collaborative public-private project between Silex Systems Ltd (Silex), the UNSW Sydney (UNSW) and Silicon Quantum Computing Pty Ltd (SQC). The project involves the development and commercialisation of a silicon Laser Isotope Separation (LIS) process originally invented by Silex. Silex’s LIS technology has the potential to efficiently produce Zero-Spin Silicon (ZS-Si) to provide a secure supply of this key material for SQC in support of its efforts to commercialise silicon-based quantum computing in conjunction with UNSW.
This position is ideal for candidates with a high attention to detail and focus on quality, with extensive experience in mechanical focused technical work, and experience in gas-based plant equipment fabrication and assembly.
Fixed Term – Until End 2022
Full-time (35 hours per week)
$80k-$90k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
The appointee will be:
- Employed by the UNSW, working at Silex’s Lucas Heights facilities;
- Supervised by the SILEX Engineering Manager and Dr Gilles Buchs at UNSW/SQC. Scheduled tasks on the collaboration project will be assigned and monitored by the ZS-Si Project Manager;
- Required to be an Australian citizen and be eligible to be granted a National Security Clearance.
Accountabilities
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Mechanical assembly of Laser Isotope Separation (LIS) plant equipment as per design documentation;
- Perform manual tasks (such as minor machining and welding) as required;
- Construct laboratory infrastructure to support plant equipment commissioning and operation;
- Contribute to the configuration and operation of plant equipment for the silicon LIS process;
- Assemble, commission, integrate and evaluate prototype sub-systems;
- Assist in design and conceptualisation activities as required;
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of Silex and the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Skills and Experience
- Australian citizenship and be eligible to be granted a National Security Clearance;
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical qualification;
- 10+ years of wide-ranging mechanical focussed technical experience;
- Experience with gas-based plant equipment (scientific or high purity systems experience highly desirable);
- Self-motivated, with a strong interest for building practical knowledge and know-how;
- Ability to research mechanical characteristics, learn on-the-go and self-filter to arrive at efficient solutions;
- Excellent documentation, communication, and organisational skills;
- Ability to read 2D drawing documentation (CAD experience desirable);
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop positive relationships with stakeholders at all levels and work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to set priorities and manage workflow independently within a dynamic working environment, meeting deadlines while maintaining accuracy.
- Ability to use judgment and discretion and seek advice and assistance from senior/specialist staff as required.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
