About the Opportunity

The International Student Support Advisor is responsible for assessing the support needs of students, providing tailored guidance and advice that allows students to manage issues and behaviours that may be impacting their progression. This involves working closely with students using person centred, strengths-based approaches to develop strategies for coping with study or personal issues and to achieve their potential. The role involves regular collaborative engagement with colleagues from , the wider Student Life  division, other services and stakeholders from across the University and external service providers.

The role of International Student Support Advisor reports to the Team Lead, Student Support and has no direct reports.

About the Successful Candidate

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and extensive experience in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Education or related fields, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Mandarin skills essential
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to provide expert guidance and advice on a range of issues impacting student welfare, participation, retention and success within the higher education sector.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to empathise and provide specialised advice to clients with a broad range of needs.
  • Proven experience providing high quality support programs or service delivery to people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Capacity to support students to navigate administrative processes in a complex environment, consult and influence stakeholders and advocate on behalf of students.
  • Strong organisational skills including a demonstrated ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and work efficiently and effectively under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and manage competing demands, and work with minimum supervision in a busy environment.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
