    The School of Physics operates within the Faculty of Science, UNSW and is one of the leading Physics departments in Australia. The School has a strong teaching and research culture and the staff are conducting cutting edge research in astrophysics, physics, theoretical physics, acoustics, and biophysics. Currently the School of Physics has some 30 permanent academic staff, approximately 50 research staff and 15 support staff. The School is involved with three ARC Centres of Excellence, including the ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science (ACEx). The primary mission of ACEx is to manipulate the way light energy is absorbed, transported and transformed in advanced molecular materials, with the aim of improving the way energy is generated and used.

    About the role

    • $75K-$100K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
    • Fixed Term – 2 years
    • Full-time (35 hours per week)

    The Research Associate will work in the UNSW Node of ACEx and use spin and optical spectroscopic approaches to understand the formation, transport, transformation, interaction and recombination of excitons in organic, inorganic and hybrid materials.

    The Research Associate will work in a highly collaborative research environment which will require developing and maintaining strong links within the UNSW Node and with research groups across ACEx (University of Melbourne, Monash, Sydney and RMIT).

    About the successful applicant

    To be successful in this role you will have:

    • Hold, or will soon expect to hold, a doctoral degree in physics or an allied discipline.
    • Demonstrated experience in spin physics and spin-based spectroscopy (e.g. pulsed EPR).
    • Demonstrated experience in characterisation of organic optoelectronic materials and devices.
    • Demonstrated experience in the development of experimental apparatus.
    • Demonstrated experience in data analysis and scientific communication.
    • Demonstrated capability to produce high quality research publications.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
    • Demonstrated experience in fabrication of devices from oxygen sensitive materials, particularly in an inert environment.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a research team and to contribute to the broader intellectual environment of the School of Physics.
    • Experience with python or equivalent programming experience is desirable.
    • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
